Youth Programs

The goal of Synagogue for the Arts youth programs is to bridge the period from the Bar Mitzvah experience to college entrance. To achieve that, we have multipronged programming that seeks to compete effectively with all the other things pulling at the attention of today's teens.

By their teens, it's hard for kids to find venues in which they can participate in activities for the fun of it, whether or not they are particularly expert at something. We offer sports, music and recreation in a relaxed and accessible environment. We combine that with a "low-key" connection to Jewish life.

Our "CCS Joo Croo" can be found playing highly competitive basketball against other New York synagogues, playing for our rock band at gigs for other teens and at cabarets, visiting the studios of MTV, participating in soup kitchens and going to WNBA games. Most importantly, we all gather on Saturday morning in the spring for our gala Youth Shabbat.

Our teens also participate in the programming of the Downtown Kehillah. There are four to six events a year, including Shabbat dinners at SFTA and neighboring congregations, the "Battle of the Bands", and programs for Yom HaAtmaut (Israel Independence Day) and Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day).
