Tribeca Illuminated

lluminations - Collages by Rachel Leibman - first show of the new season at Synagogue for the Arts Gallery Space in Tribeca

Rachel Leibman's art has been inspired by ancient tapestries, illuminated manuscripts, painted ceramics and intricate mosaics. She first started painting in acrylics and then oils, tried collage and found her voice in this medium where the small colored pieces of cut paper became her palette. "Painting" colorful, detailed and often elaborate pictures composed of images of ancient manuscripts, Leibman consciously uses manuscripts of different religions, languages and styles - to pay homage to those who came before and celebrate the uniqueness of our varied heritages. At the same time, the collages - rich in color, texture and imaginative imagery, express the human interconnectedness and cultural melding that is our global society.

Rachel Leibman lives and works in Montclair, New Jersey and has shown her collages in solo and group shows in New York and New Jersey.
