The Arts

The Synagogue for the Arts supports spiritual expression through the arts, whether that art takes a spiritual or religious or a secular form.

Our arts programs include a large Art Gallery in the social hall of our award-winning modernist building, as well as concerts, poetry readings and drama.

Because our arts program extends beyond our members to the broader community, we have established a non-profit organization, TribecArts, that is involved with other arts organizations and is able to seek program funding from grant-making organizations.

SFTA launched the Gallery in 1994 to enhance our mission of outreach, education and support of artistic expression in downtown Manhattan. This professionally run space features solo and group shows by emerging and under-represented artists, as well as mid-career and mature artists. A few of the professional artists in the congregation have had shows.

The Synagogue for the Arts, through TribecArts, maintains membership in the Tribeca Open Artist Studio Tours ("TOAST,") the Tribeca Gallery Association, and the Art Advisory to the Select Committee (AASC) of City Council District #1. These alliances help the Synagogue to feature interesting artistic and cultural programming, and assist it in promoting its events.

We have held gallery talks and panel discussions. Art students from Stuyvesant High School and from colleges have come to see the shows and discuss the art. The Tribeca Gallery Association brings groups of people to the Gallery as part of its tours. Tourists visit, and architects come to see the building and stay to see the Gallery. The art-oriented members of the congregation make it a point to attend openings. The Gallery is a setting for parties held by professional organizations.

Performing Arts

The SFTA sanctuary is one of the only sites for chamber music and lower Manhattan. It has been and continues to be the site of wonderful concerts by professional musicians. We have partnered musically with the Solstice Music Festival and the New York Jewish Music and Heritage Festival.

We have recently begun an exciting partnership with Black Box Entertainment which will bring showcases of contemporary Jewish music and comedy to the Synagogue on a regular basis. Jewish Week says it's a partnership that "straddles the increasingly fertile intersection of Jewish culture and Jewish identity." The events bring together some of the best talent in the world of hip Jewish entertainment. See Events for more information.

Last spring we featured a solo recital of Liszt by the young and promising Jonathan Fisher, who has acquired an impressive following. In the fall of 2005, our sanctuary was filled with music as Bernard Rose played Bach's "Goldberg Variations." We have recently been fortunate to be able to offer a series of children's interactive classical concerts, similar to Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts, featuring the Ariel Winds Quintet. Musical events of recent years have included violin and piano recitals, and a performance of world music with new interpretations of Israeli, Arabic and Turkish music.

Upcoming events include poetry readings and art lectures.
